In the 1960s through the 70s and 80s, women began to be promoted at rapid rates. however in the last few decades, the rates have dropped tremendously. There are less women in upper management jobs than there are men now. According to Dencker, women may have lower rates of promotion in upper management jobs because they start out in lower level positions than men. This means that from the start, women not only make less then men, but they have a longer career path to the top than men do.
Women face discrimination as well. This discrimination is associated with gatekeeper decision making. A gatekeeper is a person that is in charge of screening the calls and applicants so that the decision maker, person in charge usually, is not meeting with someone who may not be worth talking to because that person may be unqualified or not beneficial to them. This sort of system allows for discrimination. The biased of the gatekeeper determines who will meet with the decision maker. Women who are mothers are discriminated against in this model. Women who are mothers are seen as unreliable, not promotable, and high risk. African American women are also discriminated against even more than mothers because they start out in the lower positions that white women. They then have to deal with all the other promotional problems if they are mothers as well.
