Having lower promotion rates can directly effect, the gender gap in wages. Women start off making less money than men right from the start mostly due to a belief from those at the top that women deserve less wages than men. Women not being promoted to higher paying jobs directly effects the gender gap wages because men will continue to make more money than women unless they start occupying the higher paying positions. Lower wages also not only effects the women not being promoted, but their families too.
The inequality in promotions effect women on a race basis as well. African American women were close to achieving equal economic status to white women. However this was short lived. Today, African American women occupy the lower status jobs with fewer wages than white women. |
